Unopened
The messages you never opened, in one place.
Coming to Google Play
Unopened is in testing. This page will link straight to the store listing as soon as it is live.
What it does
A few hundred notifications arrive on a phone every day, and somewhere in them a person asked you something and never got an answer. Unopened keeps the ones you never got to, and sorts everything else out of the way.
- Who is waiting on you. The people who asked something and never had a reply, soonest deadline first — with the deadline read out of the message itself (“by tomorrow 6 pm”, “kal tak”) and how long they have been waiting.
- What became of the rest. History groups everything by what happened to it: still waiting, answered, let go, and everything else folded away. Or walk it by day, or by category.
- Categories that mean something. People, work, email, finance, shopping, travel, deliveries, offers, security codes and system noise, each one a tap away, with the apps inside it listed underneath.
- Work profiles and rules. Keep one job separate from another, or tell the app that a particular app or person is never work. Anything it gets wrong is two taps to correct, and it learns the correction.
- An evening summary. One notification at a time you choose, only when somebody is actually waiting. Nothing when nobody is.
- Search the archive in whatever language and script the message arrived in.
The sorting happens on the phone
Every notification is classified by a small model that ships inside the app — about a megabyte per language, running on the phone's own processor in a fraction of a millisecond. Nothing is sent to a server to be understood, because there is no server and the app has no internet permission to reach one. It reads English, Hindi, Hinglish, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Dutch, and you choose which of them are yours.
What it reads, and what it keeps
Unopened needs notification access, which is the permission that lets it see what your phone shows you. That is the whole app: there is nothing to sort without it. Android asks you to grant it by hand in system settings, and the app shows a plain screen explaining exactly what is read before it asks.
- What it reads: who sent a notification, what it said, which app it came from, and whether you opened, swiped or answered it.
- Where it stays: the app's private storage on your phone, for as long as you choose — 7 days, 30, 90 or a year — after which it is deleted automatically. One button deletes everything immediately.
- What never happens: nothing is uploaded, because the app has no internet permission. You can check that yourself in App info › Permissions.
- It skips its own notifications, and Android hides one-time codes from it before it ever sees them.
What it does not do
- No advertisements, no analytics, no trackers, no accounts.
- No internet access. The app cannot send anything anywhere, to us or to anyone.
- It does not reply for you, and it does not use your messages to train anything.
- Nothing is collected. Read the privacy policy.
