Yappo
A pronunciation coach that scores every sound you say.
Coming to Google Play
Yappo is coming to Google Play. This page will link straight to the store listing as soon as it is live.
What it does
Say a word or a sentence and Yappo scores every sound in it: clear, close or missed. It picks the one sound worth fixing first and tells you where you missed it. Pronunciation is a few sounds at a time, and Yappo shows you which ones.
- Hold the button, say the sentence, let go. Every sound in every word comes back coloured. Hear the sentence, hear your own take, say it again. There is no limit on attempts.
- 39 sounds, 8 sentences each. Every sound of American English has its own page: how to make it, word pairs to compare (thin and tin, ship and sheep) and where in a word you tend to miss it. The Sounds map fills in as you master them.
- Yappo shows you the mouth. Yappo is the little character who shows where your tongue and lips go for a sound, so you are not guessing from a description.
- Your own words. Type any word or sentence, hear it said, then say it and get the same sound-by-sound score. Practise the sentence you have to say at work, in an interview or at a wedding.
- Progress that stays yours. Your streak, the sentences you have practised and the sounds that are getting clearer, by day. Save a copy to a file whenever you like and add it to a new phone in one tap. Delete everything in one button.
Free and Plus
Free: all 39 sounds, all 312 sentences, unlimited attempts, the sound-by-sound scores, the Sounds map, hearing any word, your last 7 days of progress and your first five sentences of your own. Plus adds your own words without a limit and your full history with trends. It is a yearly subscription or a one-time purchase, sold through Google Play, which handles all payment; prices are shown in the app and in Google Play, in your currency. What is free stays free.
About the microphone
The microphone is on only while you hold the button. Your voice is scored on the phone by a model inside the app, and recordings are not saved: your last attempt is held in memory so you can play it back. Yappo has no internet permission, so it could not upload anything even if it tried. If you choose to send feedback, it goes through your own email app: you read the message and press send yourself.
What it covers, stated plainly
- Scores are against General American English. Other accents are not wrong; this app coaches that one.
- Sounds are scored by a trained model, and a model can be wrong. A “Report this score” button is there for the ones you disagree with.
- It works on words in its pronunciation dictionary. It needs a quiet spot and a microphone that works.
What it does not do
- No advertisements, no analytics, no trackers, no account and no sign-in.
- No internet access. The permissions are the microphone, and Google Play billing for Plus.
- Nothing you say is sent anywhere. Read the privacy policy.
